Portuguese Labour Code (Art. 234.º–236.º), Mandatory Feriados vs. Municipal Celebrations
In Portugal, public holidays (feriados públicos) are strictly regulated by Articles 234 to 236 of the Portuguese Labour Code (Código do Trabalho, Lei n.º 7/2009), as amended by Law No. 8/2016 of 1 April (which restored the four historic religious and republican holidays suspended between 2013 and 2015). A central aspect of using the Portuguese calendar is distinguishing between 13 mandatory nationwide public holidays (feriados obrigatórios) and optional or municipal holidays (feriados facultativos e municipais).
Portugal's 13 Mandatory Nationwide Public Holidays (Feriados Obrigatórios)
Under Article 234(1) of the Código do Trabalho, there are 13 mandatory nationwide public holidays on which all businesses not legally exempt must suspend operations and grant paid rest to employees:
- Fixed Civic & Republican Holidays: New Year's Day (Ano Novo, 1 January), Freedom Day (Dia da Liberdade, 25 April) commemorating the 1974 Carnation Revolution, Labour Day (Dia do Trabalhador, 1 May), Portugal Day (Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas, 10 June), Republic Day (Implantação da República, 5 October), and Restoration of Independence Day (Restauração da Independência, 1 December).
- Fixed Religious Holidays: Assumption of Mary (Assunção de Nossa Senhora, 15 August), All Saints' Day (Dia de Todos os Santos, 1 November), Immaculate Conception (Imaculada Conceição, 8 December), and Christmas Day (Dia de Natal, 25 December).
- Movable Easter & Corpus Christi Holidays: Good Friday (Sexta-feira Santa: 3 April 2026 / 26 March 2027), Easter Sunday (Domingo de Páscoa: 5 April 2026 / 28 March 2027), and Corpus Christi (Corpo de Deus: Thursday, 4 June 2026 / Thursday, 27 May 2027), celebrated 60 days after Easter Sunday.
Note on Easter Monday & Boxing Day: Neither Easter Monday (Segunda-feira de Páscoa) nor 26 December is a mandatory public holiday under the Portuguese Labour Code, although Euronext Lisbon and TARGET2 interbank clearing close on both dates.
Nationwide vs. Municipal Holidays (Santos Populares) & Carnival
Under Article 235 of the Código do Trabalho, two major categories of widely celebrated Portuguese dates are legally classified as optional holidays (feriados facultativos) unless mandated by a collective labour regulation instrument (IRCT), individual employment contract, or municipal jurisdiction:
| Date | Celebration (Portuguese Name) | Municipality / Region | Legal Status & Workplace Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 Feb 2026 / 9 Feb 2027 | Carnival Tuesday (Terça-feira de Carnaval / Entrudo) | Nationwide (Optional) | Feriado facultativo (Art. 235); off if in CBA/contract or government tolerância de ponto |
| 13 June | St. Anthony's Day (Dia de Santo António) | Lisbon (Lisboa), Cascais, Vila Real & 14+ municipalities | Feriado Municipal; applies strictly to workplaces inside Lisbon & adopting municipalities |
| 24 June | St. John's Day (Dia de São João) | Porto, Braga, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Almada, Figueira da Foz | Feriado Municipal; applies strictly to workplaces in Porto & adopting municipalities |
| 29 June | St. Peter's Day (Dia de São Pedro) | Sintra, Évora, Seixal, Montijo, Póvoa de Varzim | Feriado Municipal; applies strictly to workplaces in Sintra, Évora & adopting municipalities |
| 25 May 2026 / 17 May 2027 & 1 Jul | Azores Day (Dia dos Açores) & Madeira Day (Dia da Região Autónoma da Madeira) | Autonomous Regions of Azores & Madeira | Regional statutory holidays exclusive to Azores (Whit Monday) and Madeira (1 July & 26 Dec) |
Because each of Portugal's 308 municipalities selects its own municipal holiday (many interior and Alentejo municipalities also choose Quinta-feira da Ascensão / Ascension Thursday), an employee working in Lisbon has 13 June (Saturday in 2026, Sunday in 2027) as their local date, whereas an employee in Porto observes 24 June (Wednesday, 24 June 2026 and Thursday, 24 June 2027). Use the Portugal Schedule & Municipality Filter in the calendar table below to filter nationwide vs. Lisbon and Porto schedules.
No Weekend Rollover & Portuguese 'Pontes' (Leave Planning)
Portuguese labor law has no weekend rollover mechanism: when a mandatory holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday—such as Freedom Day (Saturday, 25 April 2026), Assumption Day (Saturday, 15 August 2026), or All Saints' Day (Sunday, 1 November 2026)—no substitute weekday is granted. Under Article 238 of the Código do Trabalho, employees receive a minimum of 22 working days of paid annual leave (férias) per year. Residents maximize these 22 days by "making a bridge" (fazer ponte):
- June 2026 Double Holiday Window (4–10 June 2026): Corpus Christi falls on Thursday, 4 June 2026 and Portugal Day falls on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. Booking Friday 5 June gives a 4-day weekend (4–7 June), or booking 3 leave days (5, 8, and 9 June) connects both holidays into a 7-day break.
- October Republic Day Long Weekend (3–5 October 2026): Implantação da República lands on Monday, 5 October 2026, creating an automatic 3-day weekend with 0 leave days used.
- December 2026 Back-to-Back Tuesday Bridges (1 & 8 December 2026): Both Restoration of Independence (Tuesday, 1 December 2026) and Immaculate Conception (Tuesday, 8 December 2026) fall on Tuesdays. Booking Monday 30 November and Monday 7 December turns 2 leave days into two separate 4-day long weekends.
- 2027 Ponte Highlights: Corpus Christi on Thursday, 27 May 2027 (book Fri 28 May for 4 days off); Portugal Day on Thursday, 10 June 2027 (book Fri 11 June for 4 days off—or combine with Sunday 13 June Santo António in Lisbon / Thursday 24 June São João in Porto); and Republic Day on Tuesday, 5 October 2027 (book Mon 4 Oct for 4 days off).
Frequently Asked Questions: Portugal Public Holidays
How many mandatory nationwide public holidays (feriados obrigatórios) does Portugal have?

Is Carnival Tuesday (Terça-feira de Carnaval) an official mandatory holiday in Portugal?
No. Under Article 235 of the Labour Code, Carnival Tuesday (17 February 2026 / 9 February 2027) is an optional holiday (feriado facultativo). Private-sector employers are only required to grant the day off if specified in a collective bargaining agreement (IRCT) or employment contract, though the government frequently grants tolerância de ponto to civil servants and banks close under sector agreements.
How do municipal holidays work in Lisbon (13 June) and Porto (24 June)?
Each of Portugal's 308 municipalities celebrates one local municipal holiday—such as St. Anthony's Day (13 June) in Lisbon, St. John's Day (24 June) in Porto, Braga, and Gaia, and St. Peter's Day (29 June) in Sintra and Évora. A municipal holiday applies only to workplaces in that municipality and is legally classified under Article 235 unless made mandatory by collective agreement or local custom.
Do Portuguese public holidays roll over to Monday if they fall on a weekend?
No. Portuguese law has no Monday substitution rule. When a mandatory holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday—such as 25 April 2026 (Saturday), 15 August 2026 (Saturday), or 1 November 2026 (Sunday)—no replacement weekday off is granted.
Which four national holidays were restored in Portugal in 2016?
Under Law No. 8/2016 of 1 April, the Portuguese Parliament restored four mandatory nationwide holidays that had been suspended between 2013 and 2015: Corpus Christi (Corpo de Deus), Republic Day (5 October), All Saints' Day (1 November), and Restoration of Independence Day (1 December).
What is 'tolerância de ponto' in Portugal?
Tolerância de ponto is an administrative dispensation granted by governmental decree (for public-sector civil servants) or voluntarily by private employers on dates such as Carnival Tuesday, Christmas Eve (24 December), or New Year's Eve (31 December). It does not automatically apply to private-sector employees unless the private employer chooses to grant it.
What compensation is required for working on a mandatory public holiday in Portugal?
Under Article 269 of the Código do Trabalho, an employee who performs normal work on a mandatory public holiday in a legally exempt business is entitled to their regular pay plus either compensatory paid rest equal to 50% of the hours worked (within 3 days) or an additional 50% wage supplement, at the employer's choice (or higher if stipulated by a collective agreement).
When are Banco de Portugal and Euronext Lisbon closed?
Banco de Portugal (TARGET2-PT / SICOI) and Euronext Lisbon close on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December, and 26 December (with Euronext Lisbon operating half-day trading until 13:05 WET on 24 and 31 December), while commercial bank branches close nationwide on all 13 mandatory holidays and Carnival Tuesday.
