How Statutory Public Holidays Work in Ghana

Statutory public holidays in the Republic of Ghana are regulated under the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). The country observes a balanced calendar of historic democratic commemorations, Christian holidays, and Islamic observances.

Executive Instrument Substitution

Section 3 Weekend Rollover

Under Section 3 of Act 601, whenever any statutory public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the President declares the following Monday (or Monday and Tuesday) as a public holiday by Executive Instrument published by the Ministry for the Interior.

Workplace Rights

Labour Act Section 35 Remuneration

Under Section 35 of the Labour Act 2003, workers required to work on a statutory public holiday are entitled to equivalent paid time off in lieu or overtime payment at double their ordinary hourly rate (200% pay).
