If a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend, Mexican statutory labor law does not shift the day off to the following Monday.

Article 75 LFT: The 'Salario Triple' Rule

Under Article 75 of the Ley Federal del Trabajo, employers and employees must mutually agree upon the workforce required to maintain essential services on a mandatory rest day. If an employee is required to work on an official statutory holiday, Mexican labor law establishes one of the strictest pay mandates in Latin America:

1. The worker is entitled to their standard daily wage for the holiday as normal; plus
2. A statutory surcharge equal to double the ordinary daily wage for the work performed.

This statutory formula results in triple pay (pago triple, or 300% of standard wages) for working on any of the official Article 74 holidays. Furthermore, under Article 71, if the holiday coincides with the employee's standard Sunday rest day, the employer must also pay an additional 25% Sunday premium (prima dominical) on top of the base salary.

LFT Labor Holidays vs. CNBV Banking Holidays (Semana Santa & 12 Dec)

A frequent source of workplace confusion in Mexico is the divergence between the labor code (LFT) and the banking calendar published annually in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF) by the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores (CNBV):

• Holy Week (Semana Santa): Maundy Thursday (Jueves Santo) and Good Friday (Viernes Santo) are official bank, exchange, and educational holidays. However, Holy Week is not an official statutory holiday under Article 74 of the LFT.
