A payment instruction submitted on a Canadian holiday does not always move through the financial system that day. The outcome depends on the payment service, the date, and the financial institution processing the instruction. A banking app may be available around the clock even when a payment system used for settlement is closed.
The most reliable starting point is the official Payments Canada system-closure schedule. It lists the dates on which Payments Canada systems are closed. That schedule is different from a province’s employment-standards calendar and from the opening hours of an individual bank branch. For national dates, also see our Canada public holidays calendar.
This guide explains what the main payment systems do, lists the confirmed Payments Canada system closures for 2026, and shows what to check before scheduling payroll, a wire transfer or a mail delivery.
| Service | What it does | Holiday planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Lynx | High-value Canadian-dollar wire payments between participating financial institutions | Use the Payments Canada closure schedule to identify non-processing dates. |
| ACSS | Retail batch clearing, including direct deposits, pre-authorized debits, cheques and other payment items | A settlement date that falls on a system-closure day may need to be rescheduled. |
| Interac e-Transfer | Electronic transfers initiated through participating financial institutions | The service is available 24/7/365, but delivery is not guaranteed to be instantaneous. |
1. How Lynx, ACSS and Interac Work
Lynx: high-value wire payments. Lynx is Canada’s high-value payment system and uses real-time gross settlement for Canadian-dollar wire payments between participating financial institutions. Payments Canada owns and operates Lynx. The Bank of Canada provides settlement accounts and oversees the system as part of its financial-system responsibilities. Lynx operates on business days, with statutory-holiday exceptions identified in the official closure schedule. Read the Payments Canada Lynx overview.
ACSS: retail batch payments. The Automated Clearing Settlement System is part of Canada’s retail batch payment system. It clears many everyday payment items, including electronic direct deposits, pre-authorized debits, cheques and point-of-sale transactions. Clearing, posting to a customer’s account and final settlement are related but not identical steps. See Payments Canada’s retail batch payment system explanation.
Interac e-Transfer: an always-available service, with timing caveats. Interac describes e-Transfer as available 24/7/365. Its consumer FAQ says transfers are almost instant but can take up to 30 minutes depending on the bank or credit union. Security checks, limits, account settings, service interruptions and institution-specific processing can also affect an individual transfer. Availability of the service does not mean all bank transfers or settlement systems operate continuously. Check the official Interac e-Transfer FAQ or contact your financial institution if a transfer is delayed.
2. Payments Canada System Closures in 2026
Payments Canada lists the following dates as system closures for 2026. Use this table when planning a Lynx wire or a payment that depends on the Payments Canada retail batch system. It is not a complete list of every provincial public holiday or a promise about branch opening hours.
| Holiday | 2026 date | Day | Payments Canada system closure |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | January 1, 2026 | Thursday | January 1 |
| Good Friday | April 3, 2026 | Friday | April 3 |

| Canada Day | July 1, 2026 | Wednesday | July 1 |
| Labour Day | September 7, 2026 | Monday | September 7 |
| National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | September 30, 2026 | Wednesday | September 30 |

3. Federal Payment Closures vs. Provincial Holidays
Provincial public holidays, employment-standard holidays, federal holidays and Payments Canada system closures are not interchangeable categories. A holiday may affect provincial government offices, an employer’s obligations or a specific branch without appearing as an additional closure on Payments Canada’s national system schedule.
| Example | What to check |
|---|---|
| Family Day | It is observed in several provinces, but it is not listed as a separate 2026 Payments Canada system-closure date. Check your bank branch and payroll provider for local arrangements. |
| August civic or provincial holidays | Names and employment rules differ by province and territory. Do not assume a provincial holiday automatically closes Lynx or ACSS; consult the national system schedule. |
| Québec holidays | Québec has province-specific holidays. Check the relevant provincial rules and the individual financial institution’s branch hours; a provincial holiday does not automatically create an extra Payments Canada system closure. |
| Easter Monday | It appears in some public-sector and service calendars, but it is not one of the 2026 Payments Canada closure dates in the official schedule. |
For a branch visit, check the branch locator or contact your bank directly. For employment questions, use the rules that apply to your province, territory or federally regulated workplace. Do not infer an employee’s entitlement to a paid day off from a payment-system calendar.
4. How Bank Holidays Can Affect Payroll and Direct Deposits
Many payroll direct deposits are electronic funds transfers cleared through the retail batch payment system. When the intended settlement date falls on a Payments Canada system-closure date, the employer, payroll provider and receiving financial institution may need to schedule the payment earlier or use a different payment date.
There is no single submission deadline that applies to every payroll provider, bank, payment file and employer. A common advance-submission policy is not a universal guarantee. Confirm the file deadline and employee deposit date with the payroll provider or bank, particularly around long weekends and year-end.
- Check the pay date first. Compare the intended deposit date with the official Payments Canada closure schedule.
- Ask about the provider’s cutoff. Ask how many business days are required for the specific payment method and whether the closure affects submission, settlement, or both.
- Confirm employee communication. If a pay date may change, verify the planned deposit date with the employer or payroll provider instead of promising that funds will arrive on the next calendar day.
Example: year-end 2026. Payments Canada lists Friday, December 25 as a closure and Monday, December 28 as the Boxing Day-related closure. The dates in between are a weekend. A payroll deposit should not be assumed to settle through the usual Payments Canada systems on December 25 or December 28. Ask the provider to confirm the appropriate submission deadline and employee deposit date well in advance. Our Working Days & Net Business Time Calculator can help count calendar days, but it does not replace a bank’s cutoff schedule.
5. Canada Day and Boxing Day Weekend Rules
Do not apply one universal weekend-rollover rule to every holiday, employee entitlement, bank branch and payment system. The relevant legal rule depends on the holiday and the context, while system processing should be checked against the payment operator’s published schedule.
Canada Day. The federal Holidays Act states that July 1 is Canada Day when it is not a Sunday. When July 1 falls on a Sunday, July 2 is the legal holiday. This does not mean that every Saturday holiday is automatically shifted to Monday for all employment or payment purposes. Consult the law and payment schedule relevant to the situation.
Boxing Day in 2026. December 26, 2026 falls on a Saturday. Payments Canada’s published 2026 system schedule specifically lists Monday, December 28 as the closure date for Boxing Day. For this year, account for the December 25 closure and the weekend as well. Do not turn this year’s published schedule into a universal rule for every future year; check the current schedule for each year. You can also plan leave around confirmed dates with our PTO Maximizer.
6. Canada Post Holiday Service
Canada Post publishes its own holiday schedule. Its guidance says that Canada Post is closed on national, provincial and territorial holidays, with no collection or delivery on those listed days. However, it specifies an exception: regular mail collection and delivery occurs on provincial Family Day holidays, Louis Riel Day in Manitoba and Islander Day in Prince Edward Island. Privately operated post offices may follow the host business’s hours.
Do not rely on a generic assumption that every holiday produces the same delay. Check the official Canada Post holiday schedule for the particular date. Delivery estimates may also be affected by service alerts, weather and local operating conditions.
7. Cross-Border US–Canada Wires and Official Sources
Cross-border payments may depend on both Canadian and US payment systems, the currencies involved, correspondent banks and the financial institutions sending and receiving the funds. A Canadian system’s opening day does not guarantee that a US-dollar transfer can settle if a required US payment service is closed. Likewise, an open US system does not override a Canadian closure.
Before scheduling a cross-border payment, check the Canadian Payments Canada calendar and the relevant US payment-system calendar, then confirm your bank’s wire cutoff time, currency and expected value date. Compare national calendars with our Multi-Country Holiday Overlap Finder, but confirm actual payment processing with your institutions.
